Direct connections were used at first, even as the computers changed form floppies to CDs and from serial ports to USB. At first they all were on floppies that then had to be sent to the embroidery machine.

With that came the earliest of conversion software and that was followed by a lot of small independent designers.

Then third party companies that had been servicing the professional community got into the act and made cards with designs to fit several of the home machines. At the time the smaller floppy disc was the pinnacle of the "latest" computer memory. My first machine was the same, using memory cards as well as having a computer connection. It doesn't help that computers have also changed dramatically as well! Around a decade ago most of the sewing machine companies sold machines with proprietary cards figuring you were locked into buying everything from them that way. The problem with so many slightly older machines is that all of the companies dropped them like hot potatoes as they came out with machines that connected differently to computers. I'll send you the name of a site that can help you. You can still find the memory cards that work with the 9000 on Ebay and you'll probably want some additional blank ones. You may not need the magic box, if you have the customizer (as long as it is compatible with the version of Windows that your computer runs).

I can't buy a new machine, and if I learn this it will be a fun thing to use! Yes, we still have a computer with a floppy disk drive! Good point, bibit! Thanks for that reminder! I looked at the "read me" portion and every other word was foreign to me. Hubby installed everything on the computer and now it's up to me to decipher it all and learn to use it. The Customizer came with a blank memory card. It says it's also for "memory card design import". Supposedly it enables "easy import" and "easy edit". I bought the Customizer 2000 with a memory craft reader/writer at the same time as machine. "separate disk reader of sorts" - not sure what that is. I have been looking into buying an embroidery machine, but have not really been able to justify the purchase to myself. SEW) and not the current format that Janome now uses (.JEF) To convert from one format to another, you can purchase a Magic Box, usually there are a few available on Ebay. The Janome 9000 takes memory cards, although it reads files in the older format (I believe it is.

I am thinking of getting that now while they are still around, and before my 2 machines croak, at which point, my designs will be in prison on that PC. I am contemplating on buying an external floppy drive just so I could transfer designs from the computer to a floppy which I need to stick into my machine. I still have 2 operating desk tops with those drives, but my new laptop only has a CD drive. Southward - I checked your Janome 9000 and it looks like you have to buy a separate disk reader of sorts? If that disk reader takes only 3.5" floppy, make sure you still have a computer that has a 3.5" disk drive.
